ABOUT
In my Analytic and Persuasive Writing course in the Spring of 2013, I was assigned a paper and subsequent multi-media project regarding the criminal justice system. The subtopic I chose relating to the overarching theme was solitary confinement in the juvenile justice system. I quickly discovered during the research process that solitary confinement is an unethical form of punishment, ineffective in preventing harm to society and inefficient in aiding the rehabilitation process that is so greatly lauded among juvenile justice officials.
My proposal sets forth a series of reform amendments to current policies and practices that include elimination of solitary confinement, increased funding towards alternatives to detention, additional or the creation of exercise programs and evidence-based therapy, and a thorough evaluation of management and rehabilitation tactics overall. Injustices can be prevented through policy reform, mitigation practices, shortening sentences for misdemeanors and drug offenses, and the termination of direct-filing a juvenile into an adult court.
